Athletes told to repeat achievements at 2019 SEA Games, 2020 Olympics

Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin, who is also Indonesia’s chef de mission for the Games, asked the Indonesian athletes to repeat their 2018 Asian Games achievements at the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Manila and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“I want you to repeat your achievements. There are two international sport events in which we will soon participate, namely the 2019 SEA Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Syafruddin told athletes in a casual gathering with athletes and journalists at the indoor tennis stadium in Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex before the 2018 Asian Games closing ceremony in Jakarta on Sunday.

He said his duty as Indonesian chef de mission would end once the athletes entered GBK Stadium for the closing ceremony.

Afterward, he said, he would return the athletes to the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), the National Sports Committee (KONI) and the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Syafruddin went on to say he had deliberately gathered all the Indonesian athletes at the indoor tennis stadium to have a relaxed talk with them prior to the closing ceremony.

In response to Syafruddin’s request, Indonesian pencak silat gold medalist Hanifan Yudani Kusumah said he was optimistic he could repeat his achievements and make Indonesia proud in world-class sports events.

Insya Allah [God willing], we are optimistic that we can repeat our achievements and be even better on the global stage,” Hanifan said.
